Aujourd’hui, Clem et Tuktuk partent en balade au royaume des ours, dans le parc national des Monts Valin, au Québec. C’est l’hiver et, à cette période, il y a peu de chances qu’ils fassent la rencontre de ces grosses boules de poils, car ils sont en pleine hibernation. À moins qu’ils ne soient en hivernation ? Mais au fait, quelle est la différence entre hiberner et hiverner ?
Car, si une seule lettre sépare ces deux mots, ils n’ont pas du tout le même sens !
Alors, hiverner ou hiberner, on t’explique tout pour que tu ne fasses plus la faute et que tu sois incollable sur le sujet.
Quelle est la différence entre hiberner et hiverner ?
Les deux termes ont la même étymologie et viennent du latin hibernare, qui signifie littéralement « passer l’hiver ».
D’après la définition du Larousse, hiverner signifie « passer à l’abri l’hiver, la mauvaise saison » et hiberner « passer l’hiver en état d’hypothermie ».
Hibernation
En état d’hibernation, l’animal se retrouve dans un état léthargique (on dit communément « qu’il dort »). Les seules zones de son cerveau qui restent actives sont celles qui commandent les fonctions vitales.
Son métabolisme ralentit de façon spectaculaire.
- La température corporelle baisse drastiquement, jusqu’à approcher pour certains animaux 0 °C, sans toutefois passer au-dessous.
- Le rythme cardiaque diminue lui aussi ; pour le lérot, il passe de 500 à 5 battements/minute !
- La respiration ralentit tout autant – on observe même des périodes d’apnée – ce qui entraîne une consommation en oxygène moins importante.
- Le flux sanguin diminue.
Après l’hiver, lorsque sonne l’heure de la fin de l’hibernation, l’animal se rétablit en quelques heures et reprend sa vie active habituelle !
Hivernation
Le terme « hiverner » peut s’appliquer aussi bien aux objets qu’aux êtres vivants. En effet, il était au départ utilisé pour parler des bateaux, mis à l’abri durant l’hiver. L’expression fut ensuite étendue pour s’appliquer aux animaux, que l’homme met lui-même à l’abri – comme les chevaux dans l’écurie, ou les vaches dans l’étable – ou qui le font d’eux-mêmes, comme les oiseaux migrateurs lorsqu’ils partent dans des régions plus chaudes à l’approche de l’hiver.
L’hivernation s’applique également pour décrire l’état de somnolence dans lequel certains animaux se trouvent pendant la saison froide. Leur cerveau reste actif, leur température corporelle baisse un peu, mais pas beaucoup, juste de quelques degrés… de quoi économiser un peu d’énergie. Ils se réveillent parfois pour se nourrir, se déplacer ou même donner naissance à leurs petits.
Pourquoi certains animaux hibernent ou hivernent ?
Cette pause hivernale leur permet simplement de survivre et de conserver leur énergie durant la saison froide, alors que la nourriture se fait rare et les températures sont difficiles à supporter. Ainsi, un animal en état d’hibernation économiserait jusqu’à 85 % de l’énergie dont il a normalement besoin pour survivre.
Quel animal hiberne ?
Plusieurs espèces d’animaux à sang froid hibernent ; en effet, ils sont incapables de réguler leur température et ne pourraient pas survivre au froid autrement. Pour eux, on parle de brumation. C’est le cas des grenouilles, des tortues et de certains poissons, par exemple.
Parmi les animaux à sang chaud qui hibernent, on retrouve :
- la marmotte ;
- le hérisson ;
- le loir ;
- le lérot ;
- la moufette ;
- le tamia rayé ;
- la chauve-souris, pour les espèces qui ne migrent pas.
Les hibernants se préparent bien avant l’arrivée du froid. Ils consomment de la nourriture en grande quantité durant l’été et l’automne. Ils aménagent aussi leur terrier, dans lequel ils se réfugient au moment de l’hibernation. Les petits mammifères, contrairement aux plus gros, ne peuvent pas faire de réserves de graisse suffisantes pour tenir plusieurs mois. Ils stockent donc de quoi grignoter entre deux réveils dans leur terrier, comme le lérot.
Le début de l’hibernation commence pour certains dès que la température extérieure passe sous la barre des 6 °C pendant au moins 2 jours, ou à la même période tous les ans, pour d’autres.
Ils prennent une position qui leur permet de garder au maximum la chaleur, généralement en boule, et entame leur longue « sieste » !
Quel animal hiverne ?
Les animaux qui entrent en état d’hivernation sont, pour ne citer qu’eux : le raton-laveur, l’opossum, le blaireau, l’ours brun ou encore l’ours noir.
Eh oui ! Contrairement à ce que l’on entend souvent, l’ours n’hiberne pas, il hiverne.
Comme les hibernants, il profite de l’abondance de nourriture pour constituer ses réserves de graisse durant la belle saison. Quand vient l’hiver, il peut alors passer plusieurs mois sans se nourrir, et somnoler dans sa tanière bien à l’abri.
Mais, attention Clem ! Il reste dans un sommeil léger et peut se réveiller à tout moment en cas de danger ou s’il est dérangé. Mieux vaut donc le laisser tranquille !
Clem et TukTuk n’ont, cette fois, pas croisé d’ours mais, dans cet incroyable parc naturel des Monts Valin et au sommet du pic Dubuc, ils vont croiser des fantômes et même des momies ! Tu n’y crois pas ?

Plus fort encore, l’hibernation est même étudiée par les scientifiques comme une piste possible pour envoyer les hommes sur des planètes lointaines. Ils « dormiraient » ainsi durant tout le voyage, pour se réveiller en pleine forme à des années-lumières de la Terre…
